Nuts About Nets AirHORN: Signal generator for predictive testing

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

AirHORN isn’t a site survey tool in the sense of the other products reviewed here; rather, it’s signal generator packaged as a USB dongle with, in the model we tested, an external antenna.

It can be programmed to output a signal with essentially constant amplitude in a particular 802.11b/g Wi-Fi channel (or scan over a set of channels) for the purpose of providing a known signal source useful in site survey, antenna alignment testing, interference analysis and many other applications.

Thus a notebook computer can be turned into a generator of a stable and accurate wireless signal and used in place of a real access point for placement purposes, or for generating interference to evaluate that condition during site surveys. While it would be nice to see a version of this product with variable power output, so as to simulate a given distance from an access point, this is a clever little product that will be right at home in the toolbox of installers everywhere.

T1 BER Tester and Analyzer Performs E1 testing Too

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Toronto, CanadaGAO Instruments provides its multi-functional T1 Bit Error Rate (BER) tester and analyzer, which performs both E1 and T1 tests. The analyzer supports error injection and alarm generation and is capable of sending framed words including Sa bit. It is an ideal tool for ITU-T G.821, G.826, M.2100 measurement, pulse mask measurement and E1 Jitter measurement.

This portable T1 BER tester and analyzer offered by GAO Instruments performs error code testing at rates from 50b/s to 2048kb/s and conducts 2M online monitoring making it a valuable tool for routine maintenance, repair and operations monitoring of communications equipment. Its supported interfaces include: G.703, V.24/RS232, V.35, V.36/RS449, X.21, EIA- 530/530A and RS485/RS422. This BER tester incorporates a special remote monitoring function enabling the user to easily conduct real time monitoring through software running in a Windows environment. In addition, its large LCD screen allows users to view received Data/FAS/MFAS words more conveniently than ever. The embedded software is upgradable via RS232 interface.
